Dearest Community,
This week we received a package in the mail. We curiously opened it, wondering what it could be.
Three square nails on a nice backing, with a note on the backside saying, “Square nails from Ferndale Methodist Church 1884” and a nice card. The card explained that in the process of going through old stuff, the enclosed item was found. “The back note is in the my grandmother’s handwriting. She was a member for many many years – and a very active one at that! Her name was Jessie W. I think she would have liked you to have this back.” What an unexpected piece of memorabilia.
These nails got me thinking. When they were hammered into wood, it was done with the purpose of building a church. There would have been hope and prayers for the future. Eventually this church would have been moved down Vista hill to our current location (with a stop half-way for Sunday services).
Can you imagine climbing into the church that Sunday?
Then the church would have welcomed another congregation from downtown, as the two congregations became one. The church would have watched as the Fellowship Hall structure was constructed next door.
What would it’s thoughts have been as it was tour down for our current church building?
But what I’ve really been pondering is those kinds of nails that hold us together? What are the “nails” that hold our community together? What are the “nails” that hold our church together? What are the “nails” that hold our families and even ourselves together?
I don’t know what your answers are to these questions, but for me, it seems that it is the Spirit of Life and Love that binds us together. May it always be so.
Blessings,
