Seeing the Flowing Relationship in the Trinity – Pastoral Letter

Dearest Community, I based the “cover” image on an idea from John Wesley – the flowing between the persons of the Trinity. Each one fills the other chalice up so that they in turn can fill another. There is a sense of flowing between these images of the Trinity. (Yup, it’s Trinity Sunday this coming Sunday) Sometimes I think what gets missed with discussions about the Trinity is the relationship. The relationship almost seems to have a gravitational pull that keeps the Three in orbit. It has gotten me thinking a bit about relationships and the gravitational pull that we (or is it really the relationship itself?) have upon each other. Maybe this actually makes sense when we look at both the micro and macro levels. My memories of chemistry with the chemical models were very similar to the ways that the solar system is also working. And I don’t think that is any coincidence. There is something that pulls us together as we spin around ourselves. On Tuesday, I was sitting in a coffee shop getting some computer work done. I glanced up to see two college age people talking across the table from each other. I think they, too, were starting to have a gravitational pull around themselves. Some of these gravitational pulls are easier to see (like the young couple), but in what ways are pulled into certain relationship? Do we see the Divine’s pull at work? Are we cooperating to help them become places of compassion? Are we looking for ways to pull others into the circle, too? Blessings, Rev.
