Only Now Does Juneteenth Become a Federal Holiday – Pastoral Letter

Dearest Community,

It seems absurd that we never had a Federal Holiday to celebrate the ending of slavery until now. Juneteenth, of course, has been celebrated since 1865. But it took until June 17, 2021 for it to become an official Federal holiday in the United States.

In celebration of Juneteenth, our local town put together a ten minute film “I Am The Hope And The Dream.” Has your local town put something together? How are you celebrating?

As we celebrate Juneteenth this year, I invite you to reflect upon who else or what events need to be celebrated and honored? How does Juneteenth remind us of our calling to remember (and pass on) the stories of how God is active in our midst?

Blessings,

Rev. Joel
