Here is a sketch of my go-to art supplies as I start my new sketchbook.
This has been my “travel” pack and daily go-to kit for a while now. As I started a new sketchbook I decided to just sketch what I’m carrying around.
- I’m using the portrait Moleskin Art Collection Sketchbook, this time around.
- Pentel Water Brushes: Recently I have found myself using these more than a regular watercolor brush. (By the way, this link is for a set of three and is a better deal, as I recall).
- I found the small mechanical pencil. Not sure where you would get it, but it’s been great to keep in my pocket, or tuck into the sock-band.
- The white Gelly Roll (mine is a Sukura 08) has been useful. I’m still experimenting with how to effectively use it.
- A bic pen I found. I was surprised to find that it is waterproof, and ok to use both over and under the watercolor.
- My go-to fountain pen these days is my Wing Sung 698 EF nib with black deAtramentis Ink.
- I can’t remember where I came across the idea of using the top of a sock, doubled over to form a sweatband, that you can then use with the waterbrush to clean it. It is a nice and portable cloth. In addition, it fit’s around the watercolor box nicely to hold everything else.
- I ended up purchasing the Winsor & Newton watercolor Sketcher’s Pocket Box Set from a local art box store. One of them comes with a little fold-able watercolor brush (similar to a riggers brush).

Joel just finished using the Hand Book Artist Journal. Joel continues to use the Winsor & Newton Cotman Sketcher’s Pocket Box set with the Pentel Water Brush. Joel is also using an Extra Fine nibbed fountain pen (a Wing Sung 698) with deArtimentis ink.
