Here is a sketch of my current art supplies as I start the new year (complete with a miss-spelling 😊). If you are starting out with an art hobby this year, may this give you some ideas of where to start.
What art supplies are you starting the year with?
- Global Hand Book Sketchbook – landscape: This is the second Global Handbook Sketchbook I’ve used, but the first in landscape. I’m experimenting to see if I like landscape or portrait better. The paper will take a light wash, and I like the buff-colored off-white pages. There is a plastic envelope in the back.
- I have two Guru fountain pens from Fountain Pen Revolution. The demonstrator with the fine flex nib is my favorite.
- Pentel Water Brushes: Recently I have found myself using these more than a regular watercolor brush. (By the way, this link is for a set of three and is a better deal, as I recall).
- Fine Liners: I bought a case of Staedtler fine liners and found I tended to use the 0.2 more than the others. Recently I’ve also purchased a Uni-ball grey and a Pigma Micron brown from my local art store. They didn’t have the 0.2 so I bought the 0.1 instead.
- The Crayola colored pencils come from the case my kids used as young children. As they are young adults now, I figured they wouldn’t mind or notice that I have borrowed them.
- The white Gelly Roll (mine is a Sukura 08) has been useful. I’m still experimenting with how to effectively use it.
- My mask was made by a friend. 😊
- The Rapidograph Ink and 0.5 oz jars with lids and the Snap watercolor brush were bought at a local art store to work on sketching using the Steve Reddy style (Reddy’s website, book: Everyday Sketching and Drawing). Mr. Reddy suggests 1 oz jars, if you have trouble finding some, here is a link for the 2 oz size. I find this method handy.
- I bought the Duke 209 Fude Nib fountain pen with ink converter online some place. It is fun to use, but I find that I’m not using it that much.
- Fountain Pen Ink – I’d suggest your local art store. Then check out JetPen.com for looking at fountain pen ink. Noodlers Ink: Bulletproof Black and Lexington Grey. I choose the Sketch Ink: Lilly and deArtamentis: Archive Ink. They are all nice, but I have found that the Bulletproof Black takes a long time to dry and ends up smearing in the sketchbook. For what ever reason, it works great in the brush pens.
- The small 6 inch clear ruler and the mechanical eraser are from Grade School or Junior High. I’ve included a link to something similar, although these see through rulers with protractor look really cool.
- I found the small mechanical pencil. Not sure where to get it, but it’s been great to keep in my pocket.
- The three brush pens were cheap, and I got them online somewhere. I think they are these Wing Sung 3009 Fountain Brush Pens (3 pack). I use one with the Bulletproof Black. The other two have mixes of water with Lexington Grey (one is 1/2 ink and 1/2 water, the other is 1/3 ink and 2/3 water). They have held their water/ink without a problem and work well. I’ve been using them with the Steven Reddy method rather than carrying the little jars.
- The kneaded eraser is great to use. I got another set for Christmas.
- Pilot 3 + 1 pen was a great find at Jet Pens. I had been looking for one of the pens that has a pencil in the middle after seeing one in Japan. When this came, the red, blue and black inks are waterproof. This was a nice surprise!
- I ended up purchasing the Winsor & Newton watercolor sets from a local art box store. One of them comes with a little foldable watercolor brush (similar to a riggers brush) the other comes with a cheap water-brush. I think the water-brush is useless. I’ve used both. I like the smaller slimmer one to take with me, but I like the six mixing trays of the slightly larger one.
- The glass jar is from a fancy yogurt container if I recall correctly. It’s handy to have. Recycle! Reuse!
I hope helps in giving some useful links in starting out your own art materials.
What are you using?
Blessed Be
Currently I’ve been reading Kurt Vonnegut.
