Armistice Day Reflection – Pastoral Letter

Dearest Community,

My Grandmother always talked about Armistice Day. I don’t ever recall her speaking of the day as Veterans Day. I can still hear her reciting “the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month” peace was reached. I think the day, for her, had more to do with the end of the Great War than specifically remembering those who were lost (and, like many Americans, she lost some).

We often think of peace as the end of conflict. However, peace – a just, restorative peace – speaks about justice and compassion. What would have happened if the European nations had followed a different path (one towards restoration of the larger community) when working through the Treaty of Versailles (1919), rather than a punitive path than ended up destabilizing Europe and leading to WWII?

Do we learn from history? Such are my thoughts as I listen to the news about another European conflict.

May we be inspired by our faith to live lives that are grounded in the Divine’s desire for justice and compassion, especially working toward restoration.

Blessings,
